Mafia II
Customer Reviews:
After reading many of the reviews I was tossed on whether this would be a good game or not. Fact is: IT IS. It is well worth the purchase and actually has replay value which many games once you beat does not.
++++
rented the title from blockbuster. took me longer then the 4 days they give you for game rentals to beat it, so i bought it at gamestop for $20 (traded in alot for it). For someone who plays alot of games (me), i didn't beat this one fast like some others i've played in the past. Been playing it for about 1 week, and i am on the last chapter now (game has 15 chapters - disappointing. i think it should have more. it's way too easy.).
all in all, it's a fun game, graphics are great, weapon selection is good. i didn't like how it starts out in ww2 and you have to fight and then you go back home... call it a tutorial on how to shoot and move, but you do have to get thru that mission in order for story to continue.. you can't skip it. some of the stuff in here is kinda similar to godfather 1 story line. for ex: sonny's sister connie gets smacked around by Carlo, and then sonny goes and beats carlo up and says, if you touch her again, i'll kill ya... well, that's in mafia 2 as well. however, vito's sis gets smacked around by her new hubby, and then you go beat his ass, and say next time i'll kill ya... (liked how they kinda modeled that after godfather 1). some of it is similar to godfather 1 & 2 story line, but it does differ slightly so it's not totally copied.
didn't care for the music in the 20's/30's - gets better in the 40's/50's
cars are more fun to drive in 40/50's too, especially hot rods, ascot bailey, schubert frigates. if you get a fast car, tune it. (sport tuning). you'll be able to do donuts, 360's, drift, etc... helps when running from the cops or rival gangsters. downside - body shop won't bulletproof your ride. i wish it could.
weapon selection is pretty good - m1 garands, greaser gun, tommy gun, bolt action rifle, 38 snub, 357 mag, 1911 semi-auto pistol (very nice/pwrful), mp40 (one of my fave to use), submachine gun rifle, molotov cocktail, frag grenades, more. (downside, no sniper rifle, yet there are plenty of places in this game to snipe from)
the cutscenes pretty much make this game - but you can skip them. cutscenes are good, but some are really long.. longer then ones that were in GTA: San Andreas & GTA4.
the cops - are easy to get away from, fight, speed, etc... cops don't really bother you, especially when you bribe them.
the feds - a lil bit harder to get away from these guys, but do-able. i suggest heavy firepower - sub mg's, tommy's.. etc. use a pistol or shotgun if you're skilled enough too or want a challenge.
one thing in the game, you will go to prison. you never get a shank, so you gotta fight w/ your fists... some of the other guys have shanks though. lol. fyi, for anyone on the jail mission, the guy you gotta see in jail when you're in the yard scene, is the old guy, and he's playing chess. you gotta go towards the gate more to find him, but you'll come across the irish guys, and they stop you. you have to fight the irish guy. it's not a fight you will win, so don't even try, just lose. (you need to be able to counter punch your opponent, and vito doesn't know how to yet.. to counter, you gotta dodge punches, when a punch comes, dodge it, then quickly press the "B" button, that's how you counter. when you beat a guy enough, press "Y", it will grab him, then you press "B" 3 times, it will do a finishing move. sometimes "Y" will too.)
another hint, when you get to level 14, you have to raise $27,500 for bruno. best thing to do is bring cars to bruski to crush. don't spend your money on clothes, guns, etc... don't kill anyone, try not to get in trouble or have to bribe the cops. it will just take longer to raise the $27,500. (if you're good enough to rob gun shops, you can get like $800 a pop).
i think it's a great game, i never played the 1st one... but i don't think it's worth $60. i'd pay $40, but not $60
